The Power of Sound: How Music Supports Canine Surgery, Anesthesia, and Pain Relief

If you’ve ever played soothing music to calm your nervous pup during a thunderstorm or long car ride, you’ve already seen the powerful effect sound can have on the nervous system. But did you know that music is also being used in veterinary medicine to support dogs undergoing surgery and anesthesia?

A growing body of research suggests that carefully selected music can help reduce stress, improve anesthesia outcomes, and even decrease pain perception in dogs during and after surgical procedures. As a holistic veterinarian, I’m always looking for ways to integrate non-invasive, supportive therapies into medical care, and music therapy is one of my favorites.

Music and Its Effects on the Nervous System

Dogs, like humans, respond to auditory stimuli in profound ways. Their hearing is more sensitive than ours, allowing them to pick up frequencies and tonal shifts that we might miss. Certain types of music—particularly slow, calming melodies with simple rhythms—can help regulate their autonomic nervous system, leading to decreased heart rates, lower blood pressure, and reduced cortisol levels. These physiological changes contribute to an overall sense of relaxation, which is particularly beneficial in a clinical setting.

Music in the Surgical Suite: Reducing Stress and Anesthesia Needs

Anesthesia is an essential part of surgery, but it does come with risks. High levels of stress before a procedure can increase the amount of anesthetic drugs needed to achieve sedation, which in turn can lead to longer recovery times and potential side effects. Studies have shown that playing specific types of music in veterinary surgical suites can help keep patients calm before and during procedures, potentially reducing the amount of anesthesia required.

In a recently published study, dogs exposed to Mozart and Chopin demonstrated significantly lower stress responses compared to those in a silent environment. The tempo and harmonic structure of these classical compositions appear to have a soothing effect on the canine nervous system, while the absence of music did not provide the same benefits.

The Role of Music in Pain Management and Recovery

Post-operative recovery can be a stressful and painful experience for both pets and their caregivers. While traditional pain management often relies on medications such as opioids and NSAIDs, complementary therapies like music can enhance comfort and healing without side effects.

Research suggests that playing calming music in recovery areas can help reduce signs of pain and anxiety in dogs, leading to a smoother post-operative experience. In fact, one study found that dogs recovering from surgery in an environment with soft classical music exhibited fewer signs of discomfort and had more stable vital signs compared to those in a standard, non-musical recovery space. This aligns with what we see in human medicine, where music therapy is increasingly used in hospitals to support healing and pain management.

If your dog is recovering from surgery, experiencing chronic pain, or simply needs extra relaxation, you can incorporate music therapy into their daily routine. Here are a few tips to get started:

CHOOSE THE RIGHT MUSIC

Classical compositions by Mozart and Chopin have been shown to have calming effects on dogs. Avoid loud, erratic, or high-energy music, as it may increase anxiety.

Dr. Barrett has a public playlist of her original calming pet music she has designed specifically to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and promote relaxation. Check it out here!

KEEP THE VOLUME DOWN

Animals have more sensitive hearing than humans, so keep music at a gentle, background level.

USE MUSIC DURING STRESSFUL TIMES

Play calming music before and during vet visits, while driving in the car, during recovery, or daily at home to create a peaceful environment.

ASK YOUR VET TO PLAY CALMING MUSIC

If your pet is scheduled for surgery, ask your veterinarian if they can play soft, classical music before, during, and after the procedure to help reduce stress and promote healing.

OBSERVE YOUR DOG’S RESPONSE

Every dog is unique, so pay attention to their body language. If they seem relaxed and comfortable, you’re on the right track!
